This is the third in our series of columns summarizing some basic principles of Catholic Social Teaching. This information is reprinted with permission of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and is from the publication “Being Neighbor, The Catechism and Social Justice.”
Dignity of Work: Work is an expression of our dignity and of our involvement in God’s creation. People have a right to decent work, fair wages, and private property. The economy exists to serve people, not vice versa. “Access to employment and to professions must be open to all without unjust discrimination: men and women, healthy and disabled, natives and immigrants. For its part society should according to circumstances, help citizens find work and employment” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2433).
Prayer for Work – Creator God, thank you for providing us with the gift to share our talents. Provide our community, our nation, our world the fortitude to provide work for all which is decent and fair. Make us faithful stewards of your creation to enhance the human dignity of our global family. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit now and forever. Amen.
Invitation to Service -
This week’s “invitation to service” is a plea for financial assistance for the Homeless Helping Homeless nonprofit organization – in particular, to provide funding to house persons experiencing homelessness in local motels during extremely cold weather. Harry and Mary Fleegel report that one woman recently lost five toes due to the cold weather, another woman in her sixties was hospitalized for hypothermia. Providing emergency shelter in local motels can provide safety and warmth for those experiencing homelessness when local shelters are full; and HHH receives many referrals from local police and social workers for this assistance. Please send your donations to Homeless Helping Homeless, PO Box 475, St. Cloud, MN 56302.

The annual Poor Clare Benefit Tea scheduled for October has been cancelled due to the Corona Virus.
For over 70 years women of the St. Cloud Area parishes have hosted this event to raise funds to defray heating costs at the Monastery.
This event continues to be very important because the Sisters are dependent on the generosity of our community for their livelihood. Their gratitude is evidenced by the spiritual impact the make through their silent, prayerful presence in our community.
Please help support this event by sending any financial donation directly to the Poor Clare Monastery, 421 South 4th Street, Sauk Rapids, MN 56379
